Bob’s Healing Journey: From Rising Blood Sugars to Renewed Hope

Post by giftofhealth

Stories like Bob’s are not rare in our Gift of Health community — they are powerful reminders of what becomes possible when someone decides to retake charge of their health with clarity, courage, and support.

Earlier this year in July, Bob reached out to us with a deep sense of concern. His blood sugar levels had been rising. His weight was slowly creeping up. And despite knowing what to do, he felt himself losing control of the habits that once gave him stability and confidence.

He had completed our Food as Medicine program back in 2022 and had felt in control at that time. But life, as it often does, brought new challenges. Cruises, family gatherings, social events, travel, and his sister’s wonderful home cooking made it harder to maintain the habits he once relied on.

Bob described it honestly:

“The thing that’s killing me now is that in the last couple of years, I’ve been on cruises and visited my sister, who is an excellent cook. My weight and blood sugars have gone off the rails. I feel that I need some help.”

Even though he kept a strong breakfast routine and joined a fitness class, maintaining a healthy weight became a challenge.

His weight increased from 171 lbs to 187 lbs.
His A1C rose from 6.3 up to 7.1.

He looked at the numbers and said to himself:

“I’ve got to get back on track… otherwise this is going to get completely out of control.”

The Struggles Were Real — and Relatable

Bob shared pain points that many people in our community often face:

Supper Was the Hardest Time of Day

“Meal planning is my weakness… especially supper.”

Social and Family Food Environments Made It Easy to Slip

“I’ve been caving in to other people’s cooking.”

Travel Disrupted His Routine

“It’s hard to maintain the plant-based focus while travelling.”

He Wanted More Than Medication

“I don’t want to just manage it. I want to get rid of it.”

Despite all this, there was still hope — and that hope brought him back.

After the Food as Medicine Program, the Wins Started Returning

Once Bob recommitted to the Food as Medicine process, the momentum began building — slowly at first, then unmistakably. He began experiencing small yet powerful wins that restored his confidence and renewed his sense of possibility.

Here are the pleasure points he shared, in his own words:

1. His Mornings Became an Anchor Again

“I’ve managed to maintain my breakfast regime.”
This simple consistency grounded him and set a healthier tone for the whole day.

2. He Rediscovered Plant-Based Meals He Enjoys

“Some of the recipes I’ve developed… my wife actually enjoys them.”
Meal times became easier, more enjoyable, and more aligned with his goals.

3. He Regained Confidence at Supper Time

“I now have meals I can go to.”
This reduced decision fatigue and rebuilt his skill power.

4. His Cravings Loosened Their Grip

“I had a weakness for sweets… I’ve managed to get that under control.”
This was a major emotional turning point.

5. His Hope Returned

“I think I can get back on board and get going again.”
This shift from doubt to possibility is what truly fuels healing.

What Bob Relearned in the Food as Medicine Program

As Bob moved through the program again, he realized something important:

Using skill power instead of willpower is what makes change sustainable.

He remembered:

  • How powerful plant-based meals are for reversing diabetes

  • How to use his skill power in any environment

  • How to build go-to meals he can rely on, at home or while travelling

  • How to honour his own needs while still respecting his wife’s preferences

  • How to follow a strategy instead of relying on motivation alone

He summed it up beautifully:

“I know the skills… I just needed to sharpen them again.

The Results Speak for Themselves

Because Bob rebuilt alignment — not perfection, but alignment — his numbers began to shift:

  • A1C dropped from 7.1 down to 6.2

  • Weight dropped

  • Confidence, clarity, and momentum returned

One of the most beautiful parts of this journey has been doing it together with his wife, Charlotte:

“It’s a big boost having Charlotte on board… slowly but surely she’s seeing the value.”

Their teamwork created a supportive, loving environment where healing could take root.

Bob’s Story Is a Beautiful Reminder

  • You can always begin again.

  • Your body still knows how to heal.

  • And when you return to what works, change happens quickly.

If you feel it’s time to realign your habits, rebuild your structure, or receive the support you need, we would love to walk this journey with you in the next Food as Medicine program.

Your body is waiting for your “yes.”
