Dal Tadka is cooked lentils tempered with spices and herbs. It is one of the most popular Indian dishes. It can be served with cooked brown rice or roti.
Serving 4-6
Method:
Boil Dal (lentils) in a half litre of water. Cook Dal till it is soft for about 15-20 minutes.
Simultaneously, in a pan dry roast jeera (cumin), red chilies, cloves, onions and green chilies for 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes cook for 2 minutes. Add salt, turmeric, jeera powder, chili powder and 1 cup of water, cook for 3 minutes.
Add cooked dal. Squeeze in the lemon juice. Cook for 5 minutes and garnish with coriander leaves or cilantro (optional).
1 cup of moong dal (mung bean) or yellow lentils or orange lentils |
1/4 teaspoon of Jeera (cumin) |
2 red chilies |
1 onion, finely chopped |
2 green chilies, finely chopped |
2 tomatoes, finely chopped |
1/2 teaspoon of salt |
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric |
1/2 teaspoon of Jeera (cumin) powder |
1/2 teaspoon of chili powder |
1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice (from about 1/2 of a lemon) |
