Description

Dal Tadka is cooked lentils tempered with spices and herbs. It is one of the most popular Indian dishes. It can be served with cooked brown rice or roti.

Serving 4-6

Method:

Boil Dal (lentils) in a half litre of water. Cook  Dal till it is soft for about 15-20 minutes.

Simultaneously, in a pan dry roast jeera (cumin), red chilies, cloves, onions and green chilies for 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes cook for 2 minutes. Add salt, turmeric, jeera powder, chili powder and 1 cup of water, cook for 3 minutes.

Add cooked dal.  Squeeze in the lemon juice. Cook for 5 minutes and garnish with coriander leaves or cilantro (optional).

Ingredients

1 cup of moong dal (mung bean) or yellow lentils or orange lentils
1/4 teaspoon of Jeera (cumin)
2 red chilies
1 onion, finely chopped
2 green chilies, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
1/2 teaspoon of Jeera (cumin) powder
1/2 teaspoon of chili powder
1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice (from about 1/2 of a lemon)
